In simple words
Machine learning, or ML, is a way to build systems that learn patterns from examples. Instead of writing every rule for recognising spam, you show a system examples and labels. Learning means adjusting an internal model; it does not mean the software understands the world like a person.
Two useful terms
Feature: information provided as input. Target: the outcome you want the model to predict.
Build your understanding
Machine learning finds patterns from data to support a task. Before choosing an algorithm, define the input, target and decision the prediction will support. A small transparent baseline is often more informative than a complex model whose mistakes you cannot explain.
